Training for FDV Legislation
Family violence is a growing problem in our community and the abuse, whether physical or psychological, often occurs in rental homes. That’s why changes to Western Australia’s tenancy laws have been proposed – the Residential Tenancies Legislation Amendment (Family Violence) Bill was introduced into Parliament on 15 May 2018 and the legislation is set to take effect in December.
Over the last year Property Managers in WA have been learning about the FDV tenancy law changes in their Compulsory Professional Development (CPD) training. RMA has been participating in this training in an ongoing capacity in order to gain an understanding and knowledge on this sensitive topic for their Property Managers.
The new legislation gives tenants who are living in fear options to stay or go; either by applying to the courts to have a violent family member removed from the tenancy agreement or by providing evidence of FDV to their landlord so they can leave safely.
Director Paul Luzi explains the importance of this topic to the company.
“It is important for RMA to ensure all our Property Managers receive this training so they are comfortable raising issues and presenting their tenants with the appropriate options should a situation rise,” said Paul.
“A lot of our PMs have a strong relationship with their tenants, and as our representatives on the ground, we want them to be equipped to help in an informed, caring and genuine manner”.
Further to this training, several RMA representatives will be attending the Connect Real Estate Conference in October where the Senior Policy Officer from Consumer Protection will be presenting.
